Newcastle 3-1 Bromley
What a game tonight! I went in expecting a routine win, especially with us on a seven-match winning streak, but Bromley had other ideas.
They stunned us early. Just eight minutes in, their keeper booted the ball upfield, and somehow Corey Whitely flicked it on to Cameron Congreve even though he was surrounded by three of our players. Congreve skipped past Miley like he wasn’t even there and curled one past Dubravka. Dubravka got a hand to it, but it wasn’t enough. The away fans went wild, chanting, “Who are ya?” It was painful to watch.
A few minutes later, things almost got worse. Lloyd Kelly under-hit a pass, and their wing-back, Danny Imray, pounced on it. He flew down the right side and smashed a shot just wide. Honestly, my heart stopped for a second.
Thankfully, Howe used the drinks break to regroup. Whatever he said worked, because we finally equalized. Miley played a killer pass to Osula, who rounded their keeper but got tackled at the last second. The ball bounced back to Miley, though, and he smashed it from 25 yards. Absolute rocket. No chance for their keeper. Miley didn’t even celebrate – just grabbed the ball and ran back to the center circle.
Even though we had most of the ball (86% or something crazy), Bromley’s defense held up really well in the first half. It was frustrating, but Howe made some smart changes at halftime. Bruno and Gordon came on, and you could feel the difference right away.
Early in the second half, Targett got fouled in the box. The ref pointed to the spot, and Gordon stepped up. He buried it, cool as you like, sending their keeper the wrong way. That was the turning point.
The third goal was pure class. Bruno played a perfect through ball to Osula, who ran down the right, did a couple of stepovers to beat their defender, and curled it into the far corner. His first goal for us – and what a way to get it!
We finished 3-1, and honestly, it felt like a relief more than anything. Bromley gave us a real scare, but in the end, we showed our quality.
